Pillbox Cap

Royal Scots Greys Pillbox Cap

The Pillbox cap replaced the peaked, soft top forage cap after the Crimean War.

By 1881, the pillbox cap had evolved to be 2 5/8 in height with a band of 1 3/4 gold lacing and a leather chinstrap. Most regiments had their individual lace patterns, with The Royal Scots Greys adopting their own unique vandyke pattern. The Royal Scots Greys was also the only regiment to have just the button on top, whereas the others featured a gold lace edging.

The pillbox cap was abolished in 1901.
